Session Title: Developing Community Leaders and Advocates Time: 1:30 - 3:30
Overview:
This workshop will provide a hands-on
introduction to community organizing for
prevention and answer the following
questions: What is community organizing,
and how is it different from other social
change strategies? What skills and traits do
you need to be a successful community
organizer? What are some examples of how
community organizing can be used as a tool
for substance abuse prevention? How can you
use community organizing tools to motivate
advocates and build local leadership?
The Presenters: Malory Shaughnessy is the Statewide Coordinator of the Maine Alliance to Prevent Substance Abuse (MAPSA) and the Maine Methamphetamine Prevention Project. MAPSA has 45 member organizations throughout the state and has the mission of being the advocacy voice for substance abuse prevention in Maine. Malory has spent the past 30 years working as a community organizer and advocate, as a teacher, and as a policy analyst and researcher. Malory holds a BA in Political Science and Economics and a Master's in Public Policy from the Muskie School of Public Service. Malory is also an elected County Commissioner in Cumberland County.
Erica Schmitz is Director of MESAP, Maine's Environmental Substance Abuse Prevention Center at Medical Care Development. MESAP provides hands-on training and technical assistance for communities to translate into practice the latest research in environmental prevention. Erica's trainings are grounded in her day-to-day experience as Director of 21 Reasons, a Drug-Free Communities Coalition in Portland. She has ten years of experience in community organizing and coalition-building for prevention, and five years of experience in environmental prevention. Erica has a BA in Sociology from Williams College and a Master's in Public Policy from the University of Southern Maine.
