How to Become a Maine Youth Voices Group
Maine Youth Voices (MYV) is a grant funded project dedicated to creating the opportunity for youth to proactively engage in examining and directly address issues surrounding underage alcohol use in their schools and communities throughout the state of Maine. It is a project of the Maine Office of
Substance Abuse, funded primarily by a federal
grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency
Prevention.
The MYV project includes funded (regular) and non-funded (affiliate) groups. Regular groups receive funding for costs associated with the design and delivery of group projects towards MYV goals, youth stipends and adult stipends. All funding is contingent upon funding availability. Applications for regular group status are sent to interested potential sponsoring agents based upon direct contact and/or referrals when openings become available, or if funding is available to add a new group(s).
Affiliate group applications
are available upon request and considered at any
time. Affiliate group status benefits groups, schools and communities in many
ways, including the following:
- Participation in MYV training events and conferences.
- Technical
assistance from AdCare on activities and projects designed to meet MYV goals, and the obvious
benefit of having the activities take place in the community.
- Technical
assistance with local fund-raising efforts.
- Inclusion through
MYV Newsletter, web site, and other MYV informational vehicles in group and prevention activities
statewide.
- Provides
communities with an established model for a youth program that may fulfill youth inclusion
requirements of other underage drinking prevention-based community grants.
- Association with
a recognized and successful statewide youth empowerment network for underage drinking prevention.
Funding is actively pursued by AdCare Educational Institute for Maine communities that demonstrate interest in becoming a MYV Affiliate group through establishment of the core components of an active group. These components include forming a coalition which includes interested youth, an interested adult coordinator and an interested sponsoring agent. AdCare will also support an affiliate group through training in local fundraising strategies.
