The Next Generation of Clinical Supervision: The Powell Blended Model of Clinical Supervision
Presenter:
David J. Powell, Ph.D.
Date: September 20-23, 2010 (4-Day Training) Time: 9:00 am
to 4:00 pm (Registration starts at
8:30 am)
Location: Holiday Inn Waterville, ME
Program Description:
Treatment programs are changing constantly with new diagnostic and patient placement standards. The role of clinical supervisors is becoming essential to quality counseling. Many states require certified clinical supervisors who have passed the National Certification Clinical supervisor exam. This class qualifies for the 30 hours required by the IC & RC for most states including Maine and also prepares the participant for the national exam. The course builds on one's knowledge of counseling in order to understand the principles, practices, and procedures of supervision. Clinical supervision provides the most important resource available for training, management, decision-making and quality assurance. Supervision is also a critical element of the counseling process, ensuring client outcome and employee satisfaction. The Blended Model of Supervision has been developed by Dr. David Powell to address the changes in the substance abuse field. This course will address these changes: bridging the gap between mental health and addictions; new techniques of clinical supervision, such as solution-focused supervision and motivational interviewing in supervision; a new approach to counseling and supervision, termed by Powell "Contemplative Psychology/Supervision."
Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:
Articulate their model of supervision and at least five other models;
Articulate the latest ethical principles impacting clinical supervision;
Define the basic skills and techniques of solution-focused supervision;
Define at least ten characteristics of three levels of counselor development and supervision approaches with each level;
Identify three problems in supervision and procedures to overcome these obstacles;
Demonstrate knowledge and skills in clinical supervision, using one-way mirror, co-facilitation, and videotaping, as well as the use of the sociogram in supervision; and
Articulate a new model of supervision, termed the contemplative model of supervision and psychology and integrate that model into the Powell Blended Model.
Target Audience:
Licensed clinical personnel who wish to apply to become Certified Clinical Supervisors.

ADDICTION: A Holistic Look at the Neurobiology of Addiction & the Brain
Presenter: Stacia Fitch, LCSW, LADC, CCS
Dates and Locations: October 29, 2010, Hilton Garden Inn, Bangor, Maine
April 29, 2011, Holiday Inn West, Portland, Maine
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Registration starts at 8:30 a.m.)
Workshop Overview:The terms "addiction" and "brain disease" commonly conjure up stereotypic images and misperceptions that compulsive and out-of-control drug and alcohol use result from a perceived behavioral and moral flaw. Disagreements about the nature of addiction remain: whether it reflects voluntary or involuntary behavior and how it should be treated.
The human brain is a finely tuned communications network that manages our thoughts, emotions, perceptions and drive. As practitioners in the field, it is critical that we have an understanding of the interconnectedness of the different internal systems that play a critical role in the dysregulation of the brain caused by addiction in order to appropriately treat and support the recovery process.
In this workshop we will spotlight how addiction takes hold of the brain, why some people are more vulnerable than others and if people can really recover once they're addicted. We will also explore medication assisted treatment, family health and recovery, common myths and why they survive, implications with co-occurring disorders and neuroplasticity of the brain.
Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:
Identify the process of addiction.
Describe addictive disorders as a brain disease.
Gain an understanding of neuroplasticity of the brain.
Identify implications of brain chemistry on treatment and recovery.
Identify three needs that initially motivate people to use.
Discuss two promising new findings in neurobiology of addiction research.
The Presenter: Stacia Fitch LCSW, LADC, CCS is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine School of Social work and received her Masters in Social Work from Boston University in 1994. With over 20 years of clinical experience working with addictive disorders Stacia has had extensive training in addiction and mental health in all levels of social work practice. Most recently, she has focused her professional development on process addictions including problem and pathological gambling and addiction interaction disorders. Stacia is the Vice President of the Maine Council on Problem Gambling, a practicing clinician, clinical consultant, and part-time instructor at the University of Southern Maine School of Social Work.
Target Audience: The target audience of this one-day workshop is: counselors, clinical supervisors, substance abuse treatment professionals, other service providers in mental health and substance abuse settings and anyone else interested in the topic.
