The 41st Annual New England School of Addiction Studies will take place from June 14 -17, 2010 at St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont. The Summer School is a four-day intensive experience for participants to further their knowledge, skills, and experience in the field of chemical dependency services through in-depth coursework. The Summer School is appropriate for anyone who recognizes the impact of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs on individuals, families, and communities. Each year, participants from many disciplines come together to form a unique and diverse community. The School's comprehensive curriculum offers a wide variety of best practice courses in the field of addiction services. The School's nationally and regionally recognized faculty includes instructors who are respected for their accomplishments in the behavioral health field, and also recognized for their training expertise. The School of Addiction Studies originated 41 years ago by the six New England state substance abuse agencies, the New England Institute continues to work with the six state agencies to provide training opportunities needed to support substance abuse service system development and workforce development in our region. The School of Prevention Studies is designed for prevention professionals from various settings to combine intensive study in an area of special interest with the opportunity to network. The School features keynote addresses and a variety of workshops to choose from delivered by nationally and regionally recognized speakers. The workshops incorporate a variety of current and emerging research based prevention programming, from core through more advanced skills. This event is a collaborative effort of the New England and New York state substance abuse agencies and several other organizations. We invite you to join us for intensive and stimulating studies and networking. Over the years, New England Institute summer programs have been developed to respond to specific needs in our regional workforce. The 10th Annual New England School of Prevention Studies will again be co-located with this year's program. Participants have the opportunity to attend offerings from both programs, and co-locating the schools offers wonderful networking and combined learning opportunities for participants working in different areas of the behavioral health services continuum. | PROGRAM SITE |
St. Michael's College is located on a 440-acre campus, situated between the shores of Lake Champlain and the majestic Green Mountains, in Colchester, Vermont, overlooking Burlington, the state's largest city with overall area population reaching 200,000.Often referred to as "the perfect college town," Burlington is Vermont's largest city and the cultural center of the state. Saint Michael's campus is located in neighboring Colchester, about three miles from Burlington's Church Street Marketplace. With over 10,000 college students in the greater Burlington area, the city thrives with music, theater, shopping, restaurants and a booming waterfront area along Lake Champlain. Local internship opportunities abound with several large companies having offices in the area, including IBM, IDX, Burton Snowboards and world-famous Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Perhaps the greatest appeal of the area is living in a manageable city with great New England charm and access to urban resources, while surrounded by the beauty of some of the most scenic views and outstanding recreational opportunities in the United States. The Church Street Marketplace is a 5-block long pedestrian mall in the heart of downtown Burlington. Here you'll find retail shopping (including national retailers as well as a variety of unique boutiques and local businesses), restaurants, coffee houses, street performers, and, of course, the best people-watching experience in town! During the warmer months, the Marketplace is a hub of activity. As the fifth most popular tourist destination in the state of Vermont, people flock to Church Street to take advantage of the many restaurants offering outdoor seating, as well as the many food kiosks, frequent parades and festivals, street musicians and performing artists. Downtown Burlington's largest shopping center, the Burlington Town Center, has its main entrance right off the marketplace. Burlington's Waterfront area has a lot to offer. Often the site of various festivals during the warmer months, the waterfront is also the home to ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center, located at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain. The bike path is a 7.6 mile recreational route on which you can walk, run or in-line skate, runs right through the main waterfront area. Bike and blade rentals are available. Many ferry tours of Lake Champlain depart from Burlington's waterfront, and the Burlington Boathouse offers great views of ferry and sailboat comings and goings. The Community Sailing Center rents boats and kayaks for those wanting to spend some time on the water. |
