This guide is intended to help local, statewide, and national groups replicate an
Alcohol Retailer’s Marketing Code of Conduct. The code of conduct is a set of guidelines
to help retailers make concrete changes in their stores to reduce the impact of
alcohol advertising on underage youth.
The purpose of this guide is two-fold:
1. To provide a history and tools for local Maine communities implementing the
Maine Alcohol Retailer’s Marketing Code of Conduct developed by the YEPP.
2. To provide guidelines to communities outside the state of Maine on the replication
of the Alcohol Retailer’s Marketing Code of Conduct and explore how alcohol
advertising promotes underage drinking in your local market.
The Youth Empowerment and Policy group's recommendations for local retail alcohol marketing and its effects on under age drinking. Recommended forms and procedures to assist communities in making practical interventions are also included.
This information will help us to monitor the level of impact our work is having in different communities
The Youth Empowerment and Policy group's findings and recommendations for alcohol advertising and its effects on under age drinking. The document was developed based on findings from approximately 500 surveys completed by Maine high school and junior high students. The survey asked questions related to alcohol advertising and how those taking the surveys interpreted the advertisements. Alcohol advertising and its effect on underage drinking has become a large national debate. The Youth Empowerment and Policy group hopes that their document can help provide a youth perspective to the debate.
2004
The Findings and Recommendations of YEP concerning the enforcement of underage drinking laws. The document is the result of an intensive three-day institute during which the youth members learned from experts in the field and coalesced their new knowledge with their own ideas and experiences. The group developed survey instruments and proceeded to interview dozens of law enforcement and community people statewide. The results of the interviews were used to develop the Findings upon which the Recommendations were based.
2002
Contains the Findings and Recommendations of the Youth Empowerment and Policy Project concerning school alcohol and drug policy for student athletes. The document is the result of an intensive three day institute during which the youth learned from experts in the field and combined their new knowledge with their own ideas and experiences. This new work complements last year's Findings and Recommendations on general school alcohol and drug policy.
Contains the Findings and Recommendations of the
Youth Empowerment and Policy Project related to school alcohol and drug policy. It is a series of statements
that supports and incorporates the policy strengthening document: "Taking Responsibility:
Standards for Ethical and Responsible Behavior in Maine Schools" which was created by
the Department of Education in cooperation with the Center for Global Ethics and
Maine school staff and students, and was distributed to all school districts in Maine
for implementation in 2001.
The Youth Empowerment and Policy Project fully intends that these documents further discussion and improve policy in communities around the state. The group welcomes the opportunity to interact with other youth, parent, or school groups interested in improving policy in their communities.
